Good afternoon Oppo. I've been scouring Craigslist looking for project for the summer and came across this International Harvester Scout. Its in rough shape but the seller says it runs. Most importantly it is CHEAP. 500 bucks cheap.
Unfortunately I think it sold yesterday and I'm kinda bummed. I'm a total newbie when it comes to restoration but I'm looking to get my hands dirty and I thought this would fit the bill perfectly. Assuming this one was still available, what say you Oppo? NP? Too beat?

"Body is ruff"

The equivalent of stating "the sheet metal you see in pics is all you get."

If it's your first restoration I'd try to find something with lest rust. Plow truck plus IH is a recipe for string cheese sheet metal which is not the most fun bit of car restoration IMO.

I'm ok with some rust as I'm looking for something that will allow me to work on my welding skills. My primary concern is ending up with something that is beyond repair (or beyond reasonable repair). Of course its hard to say without inspecting it in person but do you think that might be the case here?

"May have rusted further since picture taken yesterday"

For 500 bucks I'm not expecting much. I'm just wondering if its a parts car or if it is restorable.

I think a $500 IH will definitely test your welding and fab skills. The plow scares me - not every vehicle was designed to take the loads form a front-mount plow. Assume you need to rebuild everything - brakes, engine, possibly trans, etc. I think it would pay off because $500 is really damn cheap for a driving vehicle, but don't expect to have it on the road any time soon without passing inspection. It's worth checking out.

Plus the fact snow plowing is murder on suspension and drivetrains, and stuff that gets eaten by corrosion due to all the salt they end up driving in.

Interesting. I hadn't considered the plow.

I'm not an IH expert. The wheel wells and gutters look pretty clean which is encouraging, but I'm not sure where these usually rust out. I'd go do some reading on a IH blog to find the usually rust trouble spots. Like you said - need to inspect it in person
